From Newsroom to National Leadership: Ken Lemon’s Track Record of Impact

Ken is an award-winning journalist, recognized with an Edward R. Murrow Award, three Emmy Awards, and numerous AP and RTDNA honors. He has also received congressional recognition and the Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional contributions as a reporter, executive producer, and field anchor.

Education:

Ken is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he also served on the board of trustees. He holds an IRE Watchdog Journalist certification, highlighting his commitment to investigative reporting. A New Hanover High School alumnus, Ken began his media career early by writing, producing, and hosting a radio show on WBMS in Wilmington, NC.

Experience:

Ken has served in multiple leadership roles within the NABJ, including two terms as President of the Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists, Chair of the Council of Presidents, and Chair of the Black Male Media Project. He also contributed to five NABJ convention planning teams and held positions such as NABJ Region III Director and Vice President of Broadcast for two terms. Additionally, Ken led efforts for NABJ’s Hurricane Relief, COVID Relief Funds, and Convention Grants Committee, showcasing his dedication to the organization’s mission.

Related Experience:

Ken spearheaded efforts to raise over $73,000 in scholarships for Black student journalists and led a team that secured nearly $100,000 for a regional conference featuring coding workshops and journalist awards across 11 states. He developed funding criteria to allocate $20,000 to local NABJ chapters, created career-advancing programs, and introduced certified learning opportunities. Ken also fostered connections between Black journalists and major news leaders while advocating for corporate accountability from organizations like CBS, ABC News, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and ESPN.

I’m committed to empowering Black journalists as we navigate the challenges facing our industry—shrinking newsrooms, external pressures, and the ever-changing media landscape. My focus is on protecting NABJ’s financial stability, deepening our commitment to inclusivity through meaningful partnerships and support for our affinity groups, and expanding impactful programs like NABJ Cares and the Leadership Academy.

I believe in equipping our members with the tools to thrive. That’s why I’m prioritizing enhanced training, certified learning opportunities, and strategic advocacy that elevates our voices and strengthens our presence. Together, we can ensure Black journalists are not only supported but positioned to lead and succeed.
